The following is from KCPT (Kansas City’s Public television station)

Even though Congress has just voted to overhaul the nation’s healthcare system, medical observers caution that it will take years to implement many of its key provisions, and even then, not all uninsured Americans will be guaranteed coverage.

In THE UNINSURED: A Kansas City Survival Guide, KCPT sets aside the divisive politics to navigate the places metro residents can turn when they find themselves without health insurance. READ MORE HERE

Denver, Colorado (CNN) — When the sun dips below the Rocky Mountains and the streets of Denver go dark, Lokki, his girlfriend Magic and their friend Tripp head home.

They climb in between the rafters of a highway overpass, crouching as they sit under the concrete structure that rumbles with every car that crosses overhead.

It is where they will sleep tonight. It is where they say they can live safely after escaping from abusive homes.

“It’s pretty hard,” says Magic, 18, when asked about living on the streets. “But most of the time it’s just life, you know. Life’s not going to be easy.”

Soldiers come home to fight unemployment (CNN)

Employment on July 7th, 2010 No Comments

(CNN) — After Brooks Douan finished serving in Iraq for the Marine Reserves, he returned home in October 2008 to battle something many civilians had already been fighting: unemployment.

To survive, the 24-year-old took temporary jobs in his home state of South Carolina. He donned a pumpkin costume during Halloween for extra cash. He took a temporary gig as a photographer, but he was let go shortly. The economy was to blame, the studio owners told him.

When Douan eagerly signed up for the military in high school, recruiters told him veterans were coveted hires in the civilian workplace, targeted by employers for their hard work ethic and discipline. Now, in the toughest economic times since the Great Depression, Douan is finding veterans are not immune to the woes of the economy.

Without options, Kansas City’s poorest residents turn elsewhere — even to liquor stores — for food.

Nearly 40,000 Kansas City, Mo. residents live in “food deserts” — neighborhoods that lack fresh, nutritious grocery options. And while progress is being made locally with farmers’ markets and new urban agriculture regulations, experts say there’s still more work to be done.
These low-income pockets in the city often have numerous fast-food restaurants offering cheap, quick and unhealthy fare, but they lack fresh produce and healthier choices. Grocery stores haven’t responded to the dearth of options, flocking instead to open new locations in the suburbs or more affluent communities.

Downtown’s homeless people soon won’t have to trek across town for lunch. Instead, they can dine in convenient, Gucci-inspired ambience, thanks to a unique private initiative.

In a combination of self-interest and compassion, the Downtown Council has teamed with Episcopal Community Services to build a new dining facility at 1444 E. Eighth St., scheduled to open in September
